Post subject: Networking Vista to XP to print Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>networking_sharing (more info?)
Morning, Last week I posted an issue with a Vista laptop attempting to
print to a XP desktop connected to a HP Deskjet 920C via USB.
What happened in this case is I installed the printer just like any other
network printer, but it doesn't print. I see the job in the queue, it
spools, prints and then the queue is blank
but nothing comes out of the printer. And there are no errors. I have
verified from the XP machine the printer does work
I found another article in Microsoft's TechNet Forums.
It says to add a NEW local printer and use UNC naming to add the printer to
the intranet. I have done this before at work with no problem.
Vista is suppose to have these drivers built in, but when we tell it to add
the printer after filling out the path to the printer \\computername\printer
(using the shared name)
it asks for the location of the driver. I do not know where to look for
this and when I go to HP's www site I can not download the driver as it says
it's built into
the Vista operating system and doesn't offer it for download.
Where would I point the wizard to for the driver? I looked in the
\windows\system32\drivers\en_US folder, but couldn't tell if I was in the
right place. I guess I could just keep putting
folders in until I found the right one, but I thought someone here might
have a better idea..

As you said , add the printer as local printer and test it. Then re-map it
to the network printer.
Vista Print IssuesFix printer sharing in Vista by installing local port
first ... Many Vista printer issues are solved by installing the printer as
a Local Printer ...

Thanks. I'll be giving it a try tomorrow.

...Chip..,
that's your punishment for buying HP. (
To be honest, their hardware is often good, but any piece of
software, like a printer driver, that comes from HP, is deeply
suspicious, and that's an experience over a very long time.
The next time you upgrade your operating system, you'll be hit
again.

Actually this is not my "HP", although I do own an older Laserjet 1100.
Been a real workhorse.
I ALMOST got this printer installed as a local printer. This is Vista
Business and when asked to provide the disk or use window update, I chose
windows update. After a few minutes it came back with a list of HP printers
but not the one I have, a Deskjet 920c. I tried two of the 5 and although
they did spit paper out of the printer it was blank. The drives are suppose
to be built into the operating system, so how can I load the correct driver
for this HP Deskjet 920c.
Vista Ultimate on my laptop produces the older driver window which DOES list
this printer. Could I use my Ultimate disk to install this printer? Where
would I tell it to look, or would the drive itself be enough and it would
search the whole DVD?
Thanks for any help.

I cannot know, but you can simply try it out.
What I would do first, however, is to go to HP's web site and
try to download the latest printer driver for that particular
printer and Windows Vista.
