When I try to install the full Vista SP1 package, I get an error message that
the installation failed because "the server returned a referral." I'm a home
user not connected to a server so I don't know what this means.

Thanks for anyone's help.

Vista SP1 has not been released yet, so you should not be trying to install
it.

SP1 RC1 is a publically released Beta and should be avoided for production.
I have installed it on 3 systems without any problems and am pleased with
improved performance and bug fixes included.
The RTM release of SP1 has been released and will be available next month to
current users and to ship on new systems from OEM vendors.
I believe that Jack in Boston was connected to the internet when tried to
install SP1 and the server referred to server on the internet by Googling on
the error text that may apply.
