Hello,
I have tried to install Vista's SP1 twice and both times, my computer is not
useable for up to 2 hours (which would be fine if the installation were
successful), but the end result is a nice box which tells me the following:
Installation was not successful. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 was not
installed on your computer. Error Code: 0x80070020. See
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=101139 for details.
I went to the web address, but found no details.
Windows Update could not install SP1 for .Net 1.1 until I uninstalled .Net
1.1 and then reinstalled it, so I thought that would take care of the
problem, but it did not. I have all the updates and am running Vista
Ultimate.
Anyone else having any problems like this? Any potential solutions?
I realize it is beta, but I would like to see how Vista can be improved.

OK, KB935509 installed and KB937287 installed, but Windows Update keeps
asking to install KB938371 and fails to install KB938371 at every attempt. I
have Windows Vista Ultimate (originally installed from a DVD), so I thought I
did not need KB938371.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
edsager

I suggest that you disable any onboard software anti-virus and firewall
protection.

Thank you for your response Peter.
All firewall/anti-virus protection is always turned off prior to attempting
to install the updates.
I have already tried the stand-alone installer, but I will try it again.
Thank you for the watermark fix; I also had found it and downloaded it just
in case SP1 installs successfully.
I noticed during the most recent attempt at allowing Windows Update to
download and install KB938371 that the download was stuck on 0% for about 10
minutes.

Other than ask questions on the support forum, there's not much else that I
can suggest, sorry. At least there are real Microsoft people helping iut
there (Technet).

Hi edsager,
I am also planning on installing SP1. However, I am waiting until it has
been officially released before I do so. As mentioned elsewhere in this
thread, SP1 is still in BETA so it may not work fully as intended on all
hardware. What you need to do is to post any error messages you receive when
trying to install it , together with a comprehensive list of the hardware in
your machine and the drivers you are using to the Vista SP1 Support forum.
Feedback from people like you helps Microsoft iron out any remaining bugs in
the code before it is finally released officially. The watermark is there to
remind you that it is a BETA version, and will not be present once it is
officially released.

Post subject: RE: Vista SP1: failed installation Add to elertz [Login to view extended thread Info.] Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)
I have tried:
- the standalone installation but same problem
- disabling all antivirus and antispyware applications
I have followed all the resolution steps suggested on microsoft site. All
seem ok except the final step (memtest) which returns a problem - suggesting
i should reboot with vista install cd and choose the repair option. I do all
that but still no luck.
Any ideas anyone?
Cheers

Why am I not surprised to see a problem w/Vista Sp1. MS even said with this
*patch* fixing some 300 items it may cause problems w/A/v or Spyware apps.
Even though they (MS) cause the prob. they want people to chase the AV
support people.
I would like to know how you make out w/this.
