I have Vista Home Premium and have downloaded the appropriate driver and
Canon Toolbox update for the Lide 20 flatbed scanner. However, after
installing (before plugging in the device) and then connecting, the TWAIN
source is not recognised. I'm now at a loss as to what to do. Has anyone else
experienced this or found a solution?

There is no solution.. The Canon Lide scanners do not play ball with Vista's
'Fax and Scan', but work ok if you use the Canon Toolbox..
