Post subject: Any way to get UAC to remember programs I've authorized? Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>security (more info?)
Every time I want to use a certain program that I use all the time
(book-writing software; I'm a writer), I get the message that an
unidentified program wants access to my computer. I tell it to allow the
program access: that I trust the program because I know where it's from or
I've used it before.
I don't mind answering this once, for a program installed on my computer. I
wouldn't mind having to do it more than once, if I was repeatedly accessing
something on the web, rather than something installed on the computer. I
wouldn't mind having to go in and specifically designate the program as
authorized -- either in some list (like when one designates certain sites
from which one will allow popups), or as an attribute of the program.
What's driving me crazy is that there doesn't seem to be any way at all to
get Vista UAC to remember that I know this program! Does anyone know a way?

It's doing this because the program fails to comply with the XP (yes, XP,
not Vista) programming guidelines, which were published years ago.
Therefore the fault lies with the application, rather than Vista.
The proper way to deal with this is to contact the vendor for an updated
version which is Vista compatible. Otherwise you'll have to keep responding
to the UAC prompt.

I don’t know what “certain” program that you’re using which makes Vista
always ask for permission.
But Vista asks permission every time I use Acronis, a backup tool, which has
access to all of the hard drive folders and files.
And this is why (according to MS):
“A program might require administrator privileges to access important files
used by Windows and settings that could affect all of the users of the
computer. Having this type of access can make your computer more vulnerable
to malicious software. For this reason, Windows will prompt you each time you
run the program to make sure that you want to give the program administrator
privileges to the computer. This helps stop unauthorized changes to your
computer.”
With UAC, Vista Security is more heavy-handed than the security on the very
vulnerable XP.

There appears to be no way of making the UAC -remember- your
preferences, but check here if you'd like to 'Disable UAC for certain
applications only' (http://www.winvistaclub.com/f6.html).

Dear Sir:
I downloaded MAILWASHER (an e-mail screening application) onto my new
Windows Visa computer and I am the ONLY user (so I am also the ADMINISTRATOR)
on this computer. Recently, I have begun receiving a Windows error message
AFTER I close MAILWASHER which is best described as follows:
USER ACCOUNT CONTROL
windows needs your permission to continue

Microsoft Windows
This error message DID NOT appear until last week, and no, I have long since
forgotten what changes I might have made at that time which would cause this
error message to begin appearing.
Currently, I simply click on CONTINUE and the application concludes its
closing but I would like to terminate this error message if possible.
I was impressed with your answer to someone else and felt you would know
about this.
