Post subject: Start Menu Personal folder does not open Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>general (more info?)
Im really starting to hate the start menu. If I try to open my personal
folder from the start menu, all i get is a white flash and the nothing.
If i try to explore it, an all white window opens up with just Desktop
as the address. I even tried to go to my documents and access my
personal folder by clicking on it in the address but that does nothing.
The only way to get into it is by going to my computer, users, then
accessing it from there. If i drag that folder to my start menu and add
it to the top (where your internet browser is) it doesnt work. Although
I can add a shortcut to it on the desktop and place that in the start
menu, which makes having it in the start menu null anyways since the
shortcut is on the desktop.
This has been really frustrating, I was able to somewhat fix the
problem by placing my users folder in the start menu but I don't really
like that as a fix and was wondering if anybody had a real solution to
the problem instead.

If you open an Explorer window & display the folder pane on the left-hand
side, does it show as a Desktop folder along with Public, Computer, Control
Panel, etc?

It shows all those folders as well as my personal folder but if i click
on it, it doesn't do anything, also the arrow next to it to show the sub
folders wont do anything either.
One thing I found out is that if I go to my start menu properties and
customize it so that way my personal folder opens a sub menu (like
recent items) it says that there is nothing in that folder.

Sorry for the delay in replying.
Basics first:
Did it ever work or did it work & then stop at some point?
If it did work at some point, can you recall what changed between when it
did & when it didn't?
Have you redirected your user folders (Documents, Music, etc) or profile
directory?
If you create a new user account, does its <UserName> folder on the Start
Menu work as expected?
What happens when you execute the following commands from a 'Run...' dialog
(WinKey+R)
shell:UsersFilesFolder
shell:Profile
shell:Personal
What's your level of computer experience/comfort? Have you used the
Registry editor before? I can think of a bunch of registry keys to check.

Yes, got the computer last year in May and just recently had this
problem come up this month.

It was a while ago so I don't recall doing anything besides
uninstalling a game or two.

No

Tried that a couple days ago and no go.

This comes up with all three.
"Windows cannot find "shell:respective name". Make sure you typed the
name correctly and try again."
This may be the problem or I typed it wrong.

Pretty good, I've used the regedit a couple times before.
Thanks for your help so far. Hopefully you can help me get to the
bottom of this.

OK. Check the value of the following reg keys. I've modified the reg
exports, substituting readable text for the hex(2) byte strings that an
export produces for REG_EXPAND_SZ types. Should make it easier for a visual
comparison.

Was able to find the problem
'Fix Vista Unable to Rename or Move Files and Folders Issues After
Applying KB938979 Patch » My Digital Life'
Don't recall ever installing a hot-fix though, and my problem went
further by disabling the personal folder. Oh well, as long as its fix
now. Now if only I can get the start menu to show the games folder
again...

Glad you got it sorted. Was yours a vlite install or had you deleted stuff
manually?
