Don't know if this will give you what you need, but it sounds like what
you are asking for.
Using windows picture gallery, copy pics to your new folder. Sort them
as you like, then try method described below from the help files;
Name multiple pictures at once
Using the same word or phrase, you can rename an entire group of
pictures at once. Here's how:
Click to open Windows Photo Gallery.
Hold down the CTRL key, and then click the pictures that you want to rename.
Right-click the pictures, and then click Rename.
In the Info pane, type the new name for that group of pictures in the
name box.
Each picture will be given the new name with a different sequential
number, like this:
Summer vacation 2005 (1), Summer vacation 2005 (2), Summer vacation 2005
(3), and so on.

Wow thank you so much Dave .... that was the quick solution i needed. In xp
you just had to select them now when i do it it renames them the way i want
and doesnt jumble them around .... the solution was holding the control key
while highlighting them. thanks so much!!

You know this solution does and does not work sometimes. SO annoying and
time consuming that i literally burn folders of photos to a disc and bring
them to another pc that has xp to put them in order and then label them in
order. Ill organize the pics the way i want click the first one to be
"Vacation (1)" and the whole order will be jumbled around with the pic next
to number one being 52 or something random. I so dont understand why this
has to be so complicated. In xp i just select rename and the order isnt
changed just the names.

Sorry i wasnt able to follow those instructions at all.
Go to explorer? Your talking about just opening the folder of pics in its
regular explorer type folder window? I couldnt find any option called map
with photos or dont know what that means.
I was able to go into organize and turn the menu bar on but I didnt see any
option called image and details.

Id also like to add that when i make attempts at putting them in sequence and
it gives me a crazy jumbled order... it overwrites a pic or two. So if i
dont undo it, Ill acctually lose photos without any warning.

If these are pictures from your camera they should already have a
sequential order such as DSC00001,DSC0002 etc. You can first change the
View in the folder to "sort by", "tags", and "decending" then try the
trick given to you by Dave T. Hope this helps. I usually use a rename
program for doing this. ( Something like "rename master") And simply
change the "DSC" to "family Picnic" and get "family picnic0001,Family
picnic0002 etc." hit the rename button. Hope this helps. Never had it
overwrite a picture.
