Post subject: Restore backup without deleted files Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>file_management (more info?)
My hard drive recently went bang (long story) and as a result I need to fit a
new one, do a new install of vista and restore my files which are thankfully
all sitting on an external hard drive. I tried to restore to another
computer and though I do get everything back, I also get every file that I
have deleted in the past 10 months as well. Where I have reorganised folders
and files I get two copies, one in the original location and one wherever I
moved it to.
Is there a way (I'm sure there must be?) to restore my files as they were at
the date of the last backup and without all previously deleted files? Help
would be much appreciated.

Im in exactly the same boat so would also appreciate it if anyone can
help us. This is an especially frustrating problem as I have been
running daily backups from Vista Home Premium for 10 months to an
external Seagate USB HDD. I have deleted hundreds of files in that time
and reorganised my filing substantially. When my hard drive was replaced
last week I restored to the most recent backup but find that although
everything is in its proper place, I also have all the files I deleted
mixed in. It will take me weeks to sort through all of this oif I can't
find a way to get restore to do what it's meant to do!

Unfortunately, you can't ask a restore to delete everything that you deleted
after it was taken. Especially when restoring over a new install there is no
retained information to which you can refer. At best, it may be possible to
search for duplicate files or by some other criteria (date, file size, etc)
send that info out to a file, then create a batch ... ?
At a very real risk of coming up with obvious "after the fact" suggestions.
anytime you do a major change, file/folder re-org, house cleaning - perform
a new restore point/full backup. Obvious Man strikes again!
