I have just purchase a new media center Gateway Computer pre-installed with
Vista Ultimate. I have had problems burning video and pictures using Windows
DVD Maker frequently getting "An error occured while creating the DVD"
message. I retry the download with a new disk and often it will burn. My
major problem is the disk that it burns is only playable on a computer or a
portable DVD player. It will not load on any of my TV DVD players. I have
tried different disk formats I am wondering if I need a third party software
like Nero or Roxio Creator but I have also seen the threads on the
compatibility issues with Vista.

See the thread I just started in the general group titled:
"Myths folk lore and tips on buring CDs and DVDs from Windows".

Thank you Adam,
I suspected the quality of media and burning speed is the source of the disk
error but I still have the problem with the disk made using DVD Maker not
being able to read on the TV DVD Players. Can anyone suggest a go around
solution?

Just in case you and others aren't aware of it, there is a excellent
web site called Videohelp.com. http://forum.videohelp.com/
It has been around for many years, has lots of contributors on a wide
range of topics in it's many forums and has an extensive help section
on just about everything related to playing, burning, editing videos
for CDs and DVD's, etc..
Look for their compatibility lists on the left side of the main page.
From there you will find very extensive lists on how hundreds of
different make and model DVD players handle the various brand name
media and formats and what problems others have run into. Invaluable
resource where you can look up your DVD players and see how they
perform (or don't) for others trying to play various home brew CD and
DVDs.

The media was the problem. The Memorex and Playo media I had would burn
using Windows DVD Maker but would not load on a Toshiba DVD Player or
Panasonic DVD Video Recorder. When I replaced the disk using Sony media, the
disk burn and load just fine.
Thank you again for you help.

I found the same problem. The DVD-R discs are supposed to work in my
Panasonic DVD player/recorder. So I tried DVD+R discs to see if the same
would happen. Well what do you know - that format worked and it is not
supposed to work. So all I need to do is buy DVD+R in future and all will be
fine.
