Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>mail (more info?)

I have a mail 'Group' to whom I send messages under the Bcc link to
avoid disclosing the e-mail addresses. I have been using this
successfully for years. Today it will not send out to this Group and
comes back with an error message of 'too many recipients'. I have
contacted my service provider and they are not putting this size
limitation on. Why am I suddenly getting this? Can anybody help me to
overcome this problem please?:(

Windows Mail has no restrictions on the number of recipients.
Whoever you talked to at your mail provider was misinformed.
Unless you have a business or special account, a typical
provider will have a limit in the 50-100 range. How large is
your Group? Who is the mail provider?

My ISP is Virgin Media [Cable, ex Telewest]. I have contacted them twice
about this and asked them specifically about the error message and its
'too many recipients' bit. Neither Operator thought that Virgin were
restricting the number of recipients. How can I take this forward I
wonder? The number of recipients were about 275 although I have been
taking out several addresses identified at the beginning of each message
as 'the problem'. It hasn't made any difference so far.

I found a thread that says Virgin has a sending limit of 72 emails per hour:

I have been successfully sending e-mails to this much larger group for
the last 2 years without ever having a problem. It just started
yesterday. I will go back to Virgin again and take up the points you
have made with them. Virgin Media arose from a merger of the Cable
Companies and Virgin Telecom so maybe they are introducing some
restrictions as a result. Thanks very much for your help. i will let you
know how I get on.

Glad to help out.
Cable companies are notorious for having poor support for
Internet related problems.

Well today is 28.9.08, 23 days after I first reported the problem to
Virgin Media. After 4 e-mails, 5 phone calls and one written letter from
me to their Managing Director, I have now been informed the they do
impose a limit of 90 e-mails per twenty minutes.I won't bore you with
the sheer frustation I have experienced from this supposedly 'switched
on - consumer friendly' organisation, but suffice to say that nobody in
any of their front line Customer Call centres were aware of this
limit. The guy who eventually phoned me from their Customer Complaints
Department was to say the least unappreciative of this flaw in their
service, he said that their Customer Service Operators should have asked
their IT Back-up Support Team. When I told him that 2 of them did, but
still got no answer, he just didn't seem to believe me.I said that in
any event, all of their Customer Support people should have been made
aware of this newly imposed limit. He again just didn't seem to care, I
got the impression that his mission was just to tick me off his list of
Complainants now dealt with, not to take any remedial action to prevent
further customer problems in the future.

Your issue sounds familiar in that I think I was the one who
dug up the reference to rate limiting for sending emails.
Most mail providers have a similar provision, in order to
hamper would-be spammers. It is indeed a disgrace that
first level customer service was unaware of this policy.
