Ahead of you there- tried running with HDD first, DVD drive first and HDD
only (DVD removed from boot order) with no luck.

The problem's still the Vista install. I can get it to start, but five
minutes in it gives out as nharmon91 describes.

Could this be due to having a SATA HDD connected, whether being used in the
install or not? I'll try disconnecting the SATA and running the install with
the IDE only and see if that makes any difference.

I just tried 2 more installs, a 6th or a 7th time total. Still same problem.
I also shuffle the boot order in my bios and still no change.

I am about to go insane and obviously no one knows what is going wrong. 10+
attemps and no luck. Thanks Microsoft for letting me throw $120 out the
window.

I've seen other people posting with very strange install problems that
were fixed with a BIOS update for the motherboard. Might be worth a
try, anyway.

I've (finally) managed to convince Vista to install.

In the BIOS settings, I located an option to set the boot order of HDDs
(rather than just the device boot order- I set this to HDD first, then DVD
drive), where I noticed the system was choosing my SATA drive first rather
than the IDE drive I was trying to install onto. I changed this to use the
IDE drive first, then tried to install (as an upgrade from XP Professional- I
haven't tried doing a clean install). The OS then updated flawlessly.

Let us know if this works for you, nharmon.

Sorry I'm not offering any fixes. I'm experiencing the same behavior as well. I'm attempting a clean Vista 64-bit Home Premium install on the following system:

-Asus P5NSLI motherboard w/NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI chipset
-Intel Core 2 Duo 2.13 Ghz
-e-GeForce 7100GS PCI-E video card
-2GB DDR2 RAM
-WD 500GB SATA Drive

It hangs at 14% expanding files everytime. Here is what I have tried:
- updated the BIOS to the most recent version
- removed all cards except the video card.
- tried different Vista disk, dvd drive, and hard drive
- removed 1GB of memory

If anyone has any ideas, I would be very grateful.

Thanks.

I also tried loading the winvista 64 bit drivers for my NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI chipset. I put them on a USB thumbdrive and selected 'Load Drivers' during the beginning of the Vista install. Still no luck. Now it hangs at 13% expanding files.

My next step is exchanging my motherboard for a new one with a different chipset. I could have a faulty board or the board may not actually be compatible with Win Vista 64 bit.

Exchanged the board for an nvidia 680i chipset. Installed with no problems.
