Turning your antivirus "off" seldom removes all of its bad effects.
If you want your Windows Mail to work correctly, do a trial uninstall of
Kaspersky. If no improvement, you can always reinstall it.
Another option is to upgrade to Windows Live Mail, which is less
prone to corruption from antivirus programs. For any antivirus,
email scanning must be disabled.

Is there a triangle or a plus sign in a box to the left of the folder or to
the
left of Local Folders? If so, click on it and see what happens. If
anything
disappears, click on it again to bring it back.

Robert, when I click the arroe you mention the only folder that appears
under local folders is inbox.
I need to double click the other folders (outbox, drafts, sent etc) in the
main window on the right before they appear under local folders. This is the
case each time I open windows mail.
Occasionally all mail messages dissapear and I need to close & reopen
windows mail.
Gary, I uninstalled Kaspersky as you mentioned but this made no difference.
Maybe my Windows mail has a problem, is there somewhere I could download and
reinstall it?
Does Windows live mail store emails on my computer or on a remote server?
If it works the same as Outlook and keeps them on my machine I'm happy to
give it a go, or I can put up with constantly having to expand the folder
tree.
Thank you both for your time.

I'm not familiar with even seeing the other folders listed to the right.
Windows Mail is very hard to reinstall without doing the same to the rest
of Vista at the same time.
Whether the mail is stored on your computer or another one is partly
determined by what type of account you choose - POP3, IMAP, or
HTTP.

Robert, the fact that you are not familiar with seeing the other folders
listed on the right only makes me think there is something strange with my
windows mail.
Never mind, I've installed Windows live mail as suggested earlier and that
seems to be working fine.

You are better off sticking with Windows Live Mail, since unlike WM,
Microsoft continues to support and develop it. A newer version of
WLM is expected to be released this fall. It is rumored to have full
calendar integration, similar to Outlook.

It took me just over an hour of reading and playing aound with Live Mail
too configure it in a nice simple way I am now happy with. I don't need
things like calendar as I prefer my mobile (cell phone) for that, as I have
that with me all the time.
All I wanted was a simple email program that stored everything on my
computer and didn't have problems with things like anti-virus.
Thank you again for your time, this thread has been most helpful in solving
my problem.
