Post subject: Error installing Vista on New Homebuilt Add to elertz
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>installation_setup (more info?)

Tried to install Vista 64bit. I'm able to boot up Vista only when I put
my DvD drive as first in the BIOS boot priority. Vista loads up, asks
for CD-Key, asks me to select hd partition, and then when it starts to
install i get this error:

-Windows cannot access the required D:\sources\install.wim. Make sure
all files required for intallation are available, and restart the
installation. Error code: 0x800701e7-

I put the DvD into my old rig and searched for this file on the Vista
DvD and it was found immediately. I made sure I installed the SATA
drivers before trying to install, and that made no difference. I'm all
out of ideas. I have my newly built computer all hooked up and ready to
go, and can't install my OS... im about to freak out. Please - i need
some help.

System Spec:

Mobo: Asus P5Q P45
CPU: Intel E8400
GPU: Asus EAH4850 (Asus version of the ATI 4850)
RAM: Corsair Twin2x PC2-6400 DDR2 800 (4gb)
HD: Seagate Barracuda 500gb SATA 3.0g/s
DvD:Samsung 22x DvD Burner SATA
PSU: Raidmax Aurora 2 600w
OS: Vista Home Premium 64bit (w/ SP1)

Are you trying to install an upgrade of full version of Vista64?
Do you have any other HDDs and/or partitions on your system than the one you
are trying to install to? If yes do any of them also have an OS installed?

I don't know if it's related to your problem, but 64 bit Vista
has had various issues during installation with 4 GB of
RAM installed. Try the installation with 2 GB removed.
If the installation is successful you can put the 2GB back
in. You didn't say if you have 4x1GBor 2x2GB. If it's 2x2GB
it won't run in dual channel mode with a DIMM removed,
but all you'll loose is about 10% in memory bandwidth.

I'm using 2x2gb ram. I saw there could be errors related to using more
than 2gb during the install, and took a ram stick out. This may have
helped me get through my first error I kept getting during the install,
but now I have the second one I posted above to update the situation.

I've tried multiple DvD drives, started with an IDE drive (accidently
ordered it instead of a SATA). When I had this problem initially I went
ahead and returned my IDE for a SATA dvd. Also tried my old IDE dvd just
for the sake of trouble shooting. Problem remained.

Now I'm thinking it could be a HDD issue. A couple times the HDD was
not recgonized when I would attempt another (of numerous) install, but a
reboot would fix it. Finally, it stopped being recognized completely and
perminately. Tried using multiple SATA cables and ports in case that
would have been an issue, didn't help. The same cables and ports that
the HDD would not work with, worked perfectly with my SATA dvd drive.
Could this have been the cause to a seemingly unrelated error?

The dvd drive has been working properly, i've tried different dvd drives
to be certain. It's the hdd that's been giving my problems.

What kind of problems?

Maybe it's time to replace it, hmm?

You should not have to install separate SATA drivers since you have a new
MOBO with built in SATA support.
I suggest you try again and reformat your HDD at the beginning and use the
build in SATA and Vista support.
If the SATA connections on your MOBO be sure that you have the drive you are
trying to install on connected to SATA connector #1.
