I have recently installed Vista Business on my XP Pro laptop.
The installation was as smooth as silk but it is taking a while to
familiarize myself with Vista - probably because I am old.

My problem is that I am attempting to install Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard both
from a CD and also by moving the files to a new folder on the desktop with
the same dismal result.

Error 1304 - verify that you have access to that directory etc. [at this
stage the application is writing to a common folder.

I have run setup as administrator = no difference!

Please - in very simple terms - suggest a solution that I can understand.

The install file is attempting to create a temporary directory to a
standardized location that has been moved by the user.

Example:
TaxCut attempts to create a folder called TaxCut in the My Documents
folder by using %system%\My Documents
My Documents does not exist in Vista.
Vista correctly assumes the installer wanted the Documents folder.
But, the user has moved the Documents folder to another driver for
protection of data.
When the install program doesn't find the folder in the %system% path,
it tries to create the folder.
Vista will not allow this because the Documents folder is protected and
there can be only one.
TaxCut ends up in an endless loop trying to create a folder and dies
with Error 1304.
Fix: Move the Documents folder back to the default location and complain
to TaxCut about their installer.

With other installers, the location where the temporary file is to be
written simply does not exist and Vista will not allow creation due to
protection.

The temporary folder appears to be created without problem. It is when it
needs to write to an existing 'common' folder that the problem occurs. It
ask the user to verify that permission exists but offers no way for the
verification to take place.
