I have had this problem for over two or three weeks now. I normally just let
my computer sleep, but sometimes it needs to be restarted for whatever
reason. When it gets shut down or restarted, it's like it goes back to the
default settings, or a temporary account. My background has changed, the
DELL support welcome screen pops up, any settings for the computer I have
manually set are back to default. I log onto to MSN Messenger and everything
but my contact lists, display name, and picture are back to default settings.
I also have to readd all of my music back into iTunes and recreate all of my
playlists (what a hassle!). My google sidebar has all of the default
features back on it and it tells me the San Fransisco weather instead of my
area. It's SOO annoying. And this thing pops up at the bottom that tells me
my user profile did not open correctly, and that I am using a temporary user
profile or something. Then it tells me to check my event log?? What?!
Someone help!

Have a read of the Microsoft link about corrupted user Profile, and what to
do.
Hope it helps.

The other thing you could try is a System Restore.
Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore>Put it back in time
to a date before the problem.
