i've tried cd's and dvd's, and my drive makes the whirring noise, but never
recognizes them. i went through the "device manager," and it said that my
driver was already the best one and didn't need to be updated, and that the
device is operating properly. I have a "TSST corp CD/DVDW TS-L632M ATA
Device." What can I do?

Drives fail, you could open up the desktop case (with power disconnected)
and ensure cables are reseated
