I have experienced two instances were Add/Remove in Vista does not remove
all the software, so that comprehensive installation of similar software is
not possible.

The first concerned a Scanner, where Add/Remove would not remove all the
software, so that installation of the new Scanner is not possible, until a
procedure recommended by the Scanner's makers involving modifications to the
Registry is carried out, which I could not possibly do myself, so it means
hiring a Professional to do the job!

The second concerns Spellex. Here again the old version has not been
removed, so that installation of the latest version is not fully carried
out, making the software useless.

How can Microsoft produce Windows where such problems occur? What is the
experience of others in case this is a fault with my computer?

Don't blame it on Microsoft, blame it on the people who write the
software that won't uninstall.

The Programs facility in Vista (and Add/Remove Programs in Windows XP)
cannot remove things that the software/driver installer do not properly
register as installed. The manufacturer (in this case the scanner and
software folks) writes the installer script so your complaint is more
properly with them than with Microsoft.

Nearly all software these days comes with a uninstall feature. If you
can't find a means from Vista's Control Panel Add/Remove, You can also
click on the Start button, then all programs. For example I have AGV
8. If I click on it's folder under all programs I'm presented will
several icons one named Uninstall AVG 8 Free. You can often do the
same going to C:\Program Files then searching for the folder the
application you want to remove is located in. Doing either should
clean up your Registry automatically too.

I am new to posting :)

Did you do an upgrade to Windows Vista from XP or 2000? If you had the
software installed on your old version of Windows it won't uninstall
when you do an upgrade. This has been my experience with several
different programs!

MSFT is not responsible for 3rd party software.

1.Contact the software manufacturer.
2.Google for (the software manufacturers) removal/uninstall tool (if
available).
3.Try removing the application in Safe Mode.
4.Try:
Absolute Uninstaller
http://www.glarysoft.com/au.html
Brute Force Uninstaller
http://www.majorgeeks.com/Brute_Force_Uninstaller_BFU_d4714.html
Revo Uninstaller
http://www.revouninstaller.com/
5.Do your homework (research) prior installing a 3rd party application.

....any clever operating system would record what changes occur upon third
party application installation, so that in the event the 3rd party software
is dodgy as hell and can't remove itself, the OS still can without having to
perform a complete system restore.
