If it is a NAT Router it'll only stop Internet worms and BOTs. These use network
protocols to look for vulnerabilities in services that open network ports such as TCP
ports 135 and 445 and NetBIOS over IP and attempt to exploit those vulnerabilities.
They won't block viruses that are spread such as through email.

Routers can stop people from FTP or TFTPing (connecting) to your
machine to place viruses on your machine. A firewall does the same
thing as a car firewall does. If the engine (or internet) breaks out
with fire (viruses / worms / etc...) then your router / firewall will
be there to take the brunt of the force. However, if you put something
bad into the engine your self (open emails or exe files), then you
have no one to blame but your self.
the router will stop people connecting to your machine that you don't
want to. those people could push viruses to your machine. It will not
clean your email or if you download a viruse somehow then it will not
clean that either.

No. A router is good at stopping viruses in the same way that a virus
scanner is good at plugging you into a DSL line.

Guffaw. Not running an FTP server would have the same result.
Even if you were running an FTP server 'people' would not be able to
upload unless they knew credentials that gave them permissions to upload
or could take advantage of a vulnerability in the FTP software you were
running.
If you were running an FTP server without your knowledge then the
firewall would be akin to stable, horse & bolted.
If you were intentionally running an FTP server having a firewall to
prevent people from connecting to it may seem a bit stupid.
