AVG 7.5, and Counterspy. Have used AVG for a long time, its does a good
job. Counterspy finds stuff AVG misses. Also run other programs from
time to time, each program finds stuff others miss.

I'm currently paying for a McAfee subscription because

a. am using my computer to work from home and it satisfied the
requirements my employer's IT dept.

b. at the time, I didn't know that there was good a-v freeware
available.

There will be significant temptation to switch to Avira when the time
comes, if I can get IT to go along. If not I will probably keep
McAfee. I have no complaints about it, but I'd rather save the $ if I
can.

At this time, I do not *know* that they would refuse my use of Avira.
The use of a free a-v, Avira or other, was never brought up. As I said
previously...I didn't know any better. Now that I do, I will ask 11
months from now when my McAfee subscription expires. Then we'll see.

There are many good Anti-Virus applications available, and almost everyone
has his favorite. Most of the users are emotionally attached to their AV
application and will have excellent reasons for not recommending any other
brand.
The most important thing here is that all of the available choices listed
are better in some respects than in others, and which choice is better for
*you* depends on what you do, how you work, and which features you use. The
way you use your PC is different from others.
Have a look at this:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
and be guided accordingly.
Good info can be obtained here:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20
and here:
http://www.av-comparatives.org/

BTW, the average homeuser operating a stand-alone computer can get by with
freely available good quality AV software.

ESET NOD32. Doesn't cost a lot, has a very small footprint, and seems to
update itself even more than once a day. Have used it for about six years
with no problem.

I'd be interested to know the reason as to why your IT people would not
allow you to use the free version of Avira AntiVir.
