Post subject: Security popup
Archived from groups: alt>comp>virus (more info?)

Hi,

I am running Windows XP Professional with SP2 and all subsequent
up-dates except SP3 installed. I have Norton System Works 2004
installed and working.

When I start up my PC I get a popup warning from Windows Security
that my Norton Anti-virus has not started. This popup
disappears after a minute or two most times but sometimes I have
to re-start Windows to get it to disappear.

I have downloaded a program called Startup Organiser from
www.metaproducts.com/startup_organizer.htm with the view to
rearranging the program starting order so that NAV starts before
the Win Security checks to see if it is running.

I could do this by trial and error moving NAV up the list one
place at a time until the popup does not appear but this could
create other problems. I would appreciate your advice in regard
to where I should move NAV to in the startup process to achieve
this or an alternative approach to stop the popup appearing.

Thank you for your assistance.

I don't use Norton Works but perhaps you have too many items loading at
startup. There are better tools available to manage the startup. Has there
always been an issue with Norton or did this just start to happen? You could
use the msconfig utility(start/run<type>msconfig<enter>) to stop some items
from loading and see if that stops the warning.

Did you check to see if NAV was working after seeing the popup?
iKnowPS is very useful if you don't have enough memory [freeware]
http://iknowprocess.com
Norton is known for being memory hungry. [ a memory hog ]
http://www.jasonn.com/turning_off_unnecessary_services_on_windows_xp Turn
Off Unnecessary Windows XP Services

I think Avira is supposed to be the most memory efficient free one at this
time.

This popup has been occurring for a few months now and I have
been content to wait for it to clear but it is starting to annoy
me and I would like to fix the problem if possible.

The tool I mentioned was the subject of a solution to a similar
problem in a computer magazine. If you know of a better tool
then please let me know about it.

I will try msconfig and see what it shows. The trouble is that
I am flying blind in this matter and that is not the best thing
to do. I guess more research is needed.

I wouldn't work with msconfig !
Download/install and use AutoRuns instead, it's safer and more user
friendly.

Ever considered using another AV application? Many Norton (home) users
experiencing excessive usage of system resources etc.

Also FYI (in relation to SP3)
Why Service Packs are Better Than Patches.
