Hi,
I'm currently evaluating BitDefender 10 and for now I'm satisfied. But
sometime it slows down my PC a little too much, depending of the
operation it does. For example sometime when I open Firefox it can
takes 8 seconds (instead of 2) to open, and some other time it opens
in 3 seconds! Same thing with some folders. It can vary a lot.
I'm thinking about evaluating Kaspersky to see if it will be better
regarding these slow down but maybe someone here has already runs
these tests and can share his results and conclusion. Something tell
me that they are very similar in performance, but maybe not!
However, to choose Kaspersky the difference must be really visible
because I have 2 PCs and a licence for BitDefender 10 cost $29.95 and
is valid for 2 PCs (and $39.95 for 2 PCs and 2 years!). While a
licence for Kaspersky cost $39.95 and seems to be valid only for one
PC! The difference in $$$ is big.

Hey!
I was in your same shoes; I was looking at Trend Micro instead of
Kapersky but same thing. I did not notice a huge difference. I did
find out after I purchased that BD had scored tops in a Consumer
Report study - they threw about 5000 (iirc) viruses at it that they
comissioned someone from Russia to make (in other words 100% unknown
viruses) and BD was the only one who picked them up.
I felt pretty good about it!
FYI I picked mine up at http://antivirus.citationsoft.com - they still
have the standard pack for the price I saw it up for, $35.96. I bought
the Antivirus Plus for $44.96 (I HATE SPAM!) 2 years / 2 users on mine
too.

Hey thanks!
I also hate spam but since I use Thunderbird, which has an integrated
spam filter, I don't need it, and I also use a router for my home
network so I don't need the firewall part neither. At least that's
what people said, with a router we don't need a firewall, but anyway I
use the built-in one provided with windows XP, just in case, so.

I know I can do that, but since many people probably did the same
tests why don't share the result? And beside the review I read I'm
almost sure that KAS will have the same performance, so I didn't want
to waste time uninstalling, installing, uninstalling...

I work a lot with my 2 PCs so I prefer the full protection. However I
also read that AVS work only for one year.

Thanks for the info, I didn't know that. Neither I know what a "day
zero" means, but it sounds bad enough!
But do you know if the firewall shipped with the version Plus of
BitDefender will do the job? It is surely better than the XP
firewall.
I know that the antivirus BitDefender is well rated but I didn't check
for its firewall.

Can you tell me how the antispam works with the Plus version?
Does it simply put something like "**SPAM**" at the beginning of the
subject and you just have to create a filter to catch them and process
them in your mail reader?

Depends on your machines. I can tell you that KAV 6 causes no
noticeable slowdowns on my 1.6 ghz 256M RAM machines.

Why not try a free eval of KAV or KIS 6 and find out?
If you can live without the extra protection modules in KAV 6 then
try out the free AVS offering from AOL:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?
which is based on KAV6. It's really kewl! Just don't opt for the
toolbar during installation. And make sure you have no other AV
product installed when you try to install either AVS or KAV 6 since
they will balk.

You're right. I finally uninstalled BD and install KAV on my laptop
and for now everything works fine, no noticiable slow down at all.

I also use the same Wifi router (Linksys) for my 2 PCs.
And by saying the "same version of Kaspersky" I guess you mean the
same "license"? I'm surprise it works because it's easy to send some
hardware info with the license each time it updates its signature to
check if the license is used on more than one PC! Maybe they don't
bother as long as it cames from the same IP (so the same home).
Jack
I have one version of Kaspersky running on the two
