I am having problems with Avira Free updating, automatically or
manually. I have performed the steps mentions in the Avira support
forum to clear temp files from the "All Users" folder hierarchy, ran the
preupd.exe utility from the Avira programs hierarchy (no joy),
restarted, and tried again. OS is XPSP3.

I've been having the same problem for around 4 days. It finally updated
yesterday but it would not do it yet today.
I have heard that if you have the paid version, it updates from a different
server.
I believe it is just a server problem on their end (for the free version
which I use).

Are you using the Free Version? That is the version that some are having
problems with.

Yes, their download servers (and homepage) are "overloaded".
As a "stopgap" measure you could download the latest virus definition
file (IVDF Unicode) here:
http://www.avira.com/en/support/vdf_update.html
and do an "manual update" from the downloaded file.
