Is this "working set" or "private bytes"
(and what is exacly the difference ????)

I checked mine with Process Explorer:

ashDisp.exe 4464 (working), 3604 (private)
ashMaiSv.exe 3228 (working), 2708 (private)
ashServ.exe 12128 (working), 17744 (private)
ashWebSv.exe 45564 (working), 16084 (private)
aswUpdSv.exe 224 (wirking), 424 (private)

So I have even more on the web-shield...

But my main problem is that often my PC hangs for a long while when
starting programs (no activity at all), then it continues as normal.

With an earlier avast! version it sometime locked up completly Sad

But I like it, so I won't give it up yet....

Anyone for avast! that can comment on the RAM usage?

Have you tried the free Avira AntiVir at http://www.free-av.com/ ? I
found it much lighter on resources than AVG 8.0.

It has scheduling options for scanning and the configuration options (in
expert mode) are more extensive than AVG 8.0.

You have those for free with AVG. My pc is automatically scanned late at
night while I sleep. With the command line options , I use Task Scheduler,
and scan everyother day. That way I don't have to use the pay version.

I use Poptray to do this because it saves time and reduces errors from human
interaction. Plus it takes much longer to do.

Before I enabled skins, I could not schedule a boot scan. The pull down menu
did not have many important selections , such as boot scan.

Things like the Web Shield are nice for pc novices that wander onto virus
laden sites. The prices for this is very heavy use of time and resources.
[ see my process list on another post]. They have extensive advanced options
which I couldn't figure out, much less a new pc user.

Why waste time on kidde stuff like skins?

I took Avast free off. I am now going to try AVG free 8.0. Hoping that the
footprint is much lighter. Stay tuned if you want to know what I find.

Kaspersky Internet Security only uses about 10-20 MB of RAM in the
background. There is also an option to have it concede resources to
applications that require a lot of RAM. I think it is much better than
AVG or Avast. You can activate a thirty day trial to see if you like it.

I use Avast on an older pc running WinXP, 1GB RAM, 120GB HD, and AMD
AthlonXP 2500+ processor. I have no problems running it.

Do you mean a 2TB HD?

Anyhow, I suspect that AVG isn't happy with with the quad core CPU,
and/or Vista isn't doing as good a job as it should apportioning threads
to those four processors. AFAIK, current software** is not written to
take advantage of four cores, and Vista's threading technology is
essentially the same as WinNT/2K/XP - not really built for multi-core CPUs.

** Data crunching and simulation software written for and used by
physicists and such excepted.

A nice plain vanilla machine, well suited for current software. Wink

Sorry, WK, I was being facitious. I just need a newer machine if I want to
run AVG 8 free. I like your information though. I have been on this machine
for several years and it was 3 yrs old when I got it. Money solves most
problems hate to say.
