It is not necessary to scan incoming and outgoing email.

It's a rogue application. We have very high success rates removing it. You
may wish to give MalwareBytes antimalware a try.

I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes and it did not report anything,
which I take as a positive sign! Right?
When you say "update your java, and adobe" - I think everything is
up-to-date. I'm running WinXP SP3 and IE7 with all the latest
updates. Is there a setting in IE7 that I need to check for latest
version of java?

That's not true. MBAM catchs and kills it, 100%; all known variants. And we
do reverse any policy key lockouts performed by most malware these days.

A bit inaccurate. Much antimalware these days can unlock and remove items
in memory and on the hard disk. I know MBAM has direct disk access, and I
believe SAS is now employing a variation on the technology. As does various
rootkit scanners, like gmer and icesword.

A bit late to the thread but...
1. Ignore what Butts has posted. He is no anti malware researcher and what he offers
is plagiarized scripts. He doesn't even understand fully how they work and he falsifying
his credentials as a Microsoft MVP. Beauregard T. Shagnasty has caught him in his
plagiarism and so have I.
2. Listen to what Dustin has posted. He He is an experienced programmer and a member
of the MBAM team. He KNOWS what he's talking about.
3. Take the advice Beauregard T. Shagnasty concerning email scanning. Unless you are
using Microsoft Outlook or Loutus Notes (MAPI or VIM), scanning email is worthless.
4. There is NO setting in IE7 for the latest version of Java.
5. To verify if your PC is up-to-date with vulnerability mitigation, use the services
of Secunia OSI (Secunia Software Inspector).
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/online/ It will tell you what software has
vulnerabilities and need to be updated/patched to mitigate the exploitation of the
vulnerabilities. This includes Adobe Reader/Acrobat and Java.
