I was trying to install Norton Anti-Virus, and a few minutes into the
install it stopped and gave the following error:
SYMANT~1.EXE - Application Error
The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on
OK to terminate the application.
After clicking OK, I get the same exact message for LUCOMS~1.EXE, and
after clicking OK once again, it said the installation failed. I have
tried this multiple times, each time completely uninstalling and then
restarting the computer, but to no avail. I have also searched Google
a lot, and no one seemed to have a solution. Any help would be
appreciated.
Also, I don't know if this is related, but the same type of thing
happened with McAfee virus scan on my computer. It installed, but
every time I tried to run it it crashed with that same application
error as above.

Interesting, I'll try a chkdsk, multi_av.exe, and Knoppix and see what
I can do. Thanks for the suggestions!
If you're curious, the hard drive is about 1 year old, so I don't think
it should be going sour yet.
And I had to install Norton, it was on sale at Best Buy on Black
Friday.

Have you run a chkdsk recently? Hardware problems with your disk
going south can cause this, as can bad memory or a motherboard
problem. Also there is malware out there that will prevent the
installation of the major AV players.
Try david lipman's multi_av.exe command line scanners. If that
fails too, you may want to investigate offline scanning with a Knoppix
cd and clamav or by dropping your hard drive into another computer and
having it scnaned.

You could also try an online antivirus scan if you have trouble running one
locally.
