No offense intended. Welcome to a.c.a., and by the looks of your email addy
we have something in common besides computers.
btw, I've used AVG free for years with nary a problem, but I am *very* careful
about surfing habits and no one else uses my computer.

No offense taken... and thanks for the welcome. From what I've been reading
<G>, there is a lot to learn in this group, and by the way, it's the Red Sox
that I am a fan of, just to narrow it down a little..... The original
"heartbreak kids".... up until a couple of years ago that is..... And I am
also very careful about surfing but I do a lot of it and no one else uses my
computer either so any messes or trouble I manage to get myself into, is
strictly my own doing.... thanks again.....

If you can locate an older version of Norton (NAV), say NAV 2001 or
2002 (it was also available as part of Norton System Works (NSW) 2001
and 2002) then use that. NAV 2002 is fully compatible with XP.
The older versions of NAV, once installed, will update themselves to
the latest scan engine and virus definition files avaliable from
Symantec, and you will have 1 year of free updates before the product
will ask that you pay for another year. At which point you can
un-install and re-install the product and get another year's worth of
free updates.
Symantec made it harder to pull this trick for newer versions of NAV.

I've used AVG for years now. both the free version and the professional one.
I like it because it may not stop everything but it DOES detect everything;
And its NOT going to take up half your resources like Norton or McAfee etc.
Plus, when you don't want it anymore, its a simple uninstall and its gone.
And yes, I'm careful, and don't use the email scanner because my email
client is Notes, so I don't need it.

The older versions of NAV (like 2001 and 2002) take up very little in
the way of system resources, and as I've stated before, those older
versions of NAV will update themselves with the most current scan
engine and virus definition files from Symantec.
