Running AVG 8.0 on XPSP2.

I prefer to manually update programs. Trying to do this in AVG doesn't
work. When clicking the up date button on the program's main window, or
going to tools and update the program does nothing. Using the system tray
icon by right clicking it reveals that the update option is grayed out.

What should I do to fix this?

Shut off your auto updates, and download the updates from the website when
wanted, (update from file)
I know that works I've done it.

What do I do once I've gotten the files from AVG's website? If it's to
click tools and go update from folder, then that won't work.

I'm not sure what the heck is really going on with your AVG, but, I have
had issues with the update
also, I just re-install it and choose repair when given the option, works
most of the time.
The only time I have seen stubborn problems with AVG is when the system had
an existing virus infection
and AVG was installed after the fact.

Is this the free version or full paid version?
If paid version, you probably need to send an email to AVG.
Don't hold your breath though!!!!
For the last couple weeks my update gets to the "finishing update"
point & locks the PC - have to do a reboot, then trying the update
again it works OK.
After a couple of emails to AVG & replies with questions etc., I've
since sent 3 emails - still waiting for any ideas they might have
(they haven't even acknowledged receiving my last 3 emails)!
I'm thinking of asking for a refund of the purchase $'s if they don't
improve their communications!
Cheers
Gary

Nope, it's the free version.

Mcafee Virusscan Enterprise 8.0 auto update will not run. It was working
fine until February 2nd(last auto update). It did not update on the 3rd.
When I clicked on update now if comes up 'update complete' but it is
still the old DAT file for the 2nd. So I went to the NetworkAssociates
site and did a manual update for the superdat file as I thought perhaps
something was corrupt in the engine or DAT. Now it is the 4th. and auto
update did not work once again. I manually updated the DAT file today.
This happened to me once before and I uninstalled McAfee and reinstalled
the software program to get it to work on my PC. Now it has happened a
few months later on our laptop. I went thru McAfee on-line assistance to
no avail and do not wish to contact their tech support for assistance.
OS is Windows XP Pro SP2. I cannot think of anything new and different
we have done that would create this problem since February 2nd. which
was the last successful automatic update. I am travelling and do not
have access to the software program to do a reinstall, thus the plea for
help.

Hello Pafish:

None the less, we still would probably have you try the easiest thing
first. If your travels will not take you to your install media soon,
then your intermediate solution seems viable for now, while taking the
greatest of care. Think about minimizing your exposure to the Internet.

Even though you may have heard this before, avoiding the service pack 3
update is not advisable. While traveling, SP3 will most certainly add
to your computer's security. If you have unresolved SP3 update issues,
several M.S. Knowledge Base articles are there for your assistance.

When the opportunity permits, a thorough check of your system may reveal
other correctable issues.
