AVG Free - How often are there updates?

The earlier 7.x version notified as it updated. Version 8 seems to do
this silently in the background.

I think it might depend on what OS you are using.
In my case I have a desktop and a laptop, the desktop has WinXP and AVG
7.5 free on it and it updates each morning with popups to say it's
downloading and installing.
The laptop has Vista and did have Avg 7.5 free on it , but it never gave
me any popups when it updates, now it has Avg 8 Free and it still doesn't
show any popups but it does update each morning when it's turned on.

I found this thread through google a few minutes ago wanting to know the same thing about how often free avg 8 updates. The reason I wanted to know is that I have disabled the scheduled update service and download the updates manually. I haven’t had an update in probably about 5+ days.

A previous poster dragon said check the statistics so I did. Funnily enough, the statistics said the last update was about an hour before which I new was rubbish. I decided to try another manual update by clicking on the update now button - "New update files not found" - same as before. However when I check the statistics it showed the database was last updated when I clicked to manually update a few seconds before. So there you have it. That statistic is useless, even if you click to update and there aren't any, the statistics will show the "last update" time as the time you tried to update.

The older avg 7 series updated practically every day and I used it exclusively. This avg 8 hasn't updated for ages so I'm wondering whether it is time to shift to another free antivirus.

*Edit* judging from the above I wouldn't be surprised if the scheduled daily updater didn't find a new update yet still the "last update" statistic shifted forward to the time the updater attempted to update.
