Post subject: Questions about AVG 8 Free Version
Archived from groups: alt>comp>anti-virus (more info?)

Hello,

Some questions about virus scanning with AVG 8 Free Version, as well as
about the updates.

I noticed that the scanning process itself takes an inordinately long
time -- up to 20 hours in some cases, even if it is set on fast scan. This
does not strike me as standard.

I also manually update the AVG 8 on a daily basis as there normally is an
update available. But I have noticed that there have been no updates for at
least couple of weeks.

Has had anybody had any similar experiences?

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Hounslow3, I was having the same problem as you. It never took 20 hrs. to
scan, but an awful long time. I solved the problem. I uninstalled AVG8,
and installed the free home edition of AVAST. I am much more satisfied with
it. It is much faster also.

Grisoft did with AVG 8 exactly what Microsoft did with Vista. they screwed up a good
thing. I worked with AVG 8 several weeks but I just couldn't get it to work anywhere near
right. I uninstalled and reinstalled twice. No go. I took out all the unneeded things
Grisoft put in it.

I did what another poster did. I went to Avast and so far so good.

And, I'm stikcing to XP. No Vista for me.

I hated companies who try and shove down your throat something that is no good.

My copy of AVG8 Free is set to update automatically which it does daily.
Not that you would know unless you look, as it's done without being visible.
Checking the date of the last update shows me that it has done it.

I think that AVAST is a notch better than AVG was at it's best. It scans
faster, and loads quicker on start up than AVG ever did. Like above, so far
so good. I just wish I had tried it sooner.

Go to freeforum.avg.com
They can help you with these problems.
The new versions, 8.0.135 and 8.0.138, allow for a custom installation
without that pesky Linkscanner. That should speed things up a bit.
Try this before you completely give up on AVGF8.

Goodness knows what version mine was when installed.
It updates in the background and currently shows as version 8.0.138
Even if Linkscanner is installed it can be turned off provided you don't
mind being told that "you may not be protected".
