Per John:

The freebie version of Avast. Been using it for several years,
no problems.
I would dis-recommend Trend Micro's PC-Cillin Used it for a
year or so and found it dysfunctional with no meaningful support.
In fact, the support was worse than none. With none, one doesn't
waste the several man-hours needed to discover that all they're
getting is inane boilerplate in email replies.
OTOH the place where I do most of my work uses something from
Trend Micro.... maybe they give better support to corporate
users.

Would recommend not relying on anti-virus software in the first place. That,
however, doesn't answer your question. Look for a product that updates
itself frequently without manual intervention and has a very low false
positive metric. High detection rate is a no brainer but needs to be
balanced against other factors. Look for a product that has the option to
scan only modified or new files.

Joe, would you mind giving some good recommendations. Your experience with
these would be valuable to us.
