i'm not going to fill out all that information on the download page
just to test whether or not avg can detect the eicar file...
what i do know, however, is that at this stage there are few if any
major players who don't detect the eicar file... that is why i say i
suspect there is something wrong with your installation of avg...
in point of fact, this is exactly what the eicar standard test file is
supposed to be used for... perhaps someone else who actually uses avg
can chime in on their own experience with the eicar file (although i
seem to recall mention of it's detection by avg in the past)...

Avast is the best free antivirus software available today.

I tried Avast Home last night and it immediately started chewing
resources in the passive mode
(that's why I ditched NAV for AVG)
I put it into Full Scan and it fell over, possibly due to a corrupt
d/l file.
So I ditched it immediately and reverted to AVG, getting the updates
from up to 3 servers, with an edited url.ini file.
I'll stay with AVG until I can get proof positive that I'm not going
to get another resource hog!
