As a new user to Visio 07 I am trying to drraw a floor plan of my house. When
I glue exterior wall together the lengths change. I have tried the protection
under Format and have tried changing the size in the data box as well as
manually and nothing seems to work. It seems to me that this should be a
major part of this program that any lengths you input should stay put.

It depends upon how you glue the walls together. If you take an 8ft
exterior, horizontal wall, and butt it up to the outside edge of a vertical
wall, the length may seem shorter, but it really isn't. The S&P is reporting
the interior length, which should be 8ft - wall width of the vertical wall.
If you butt the horizontal wall to the interior edge of the vertical wall, it
should remain at 8ft. However, the exterior dimension is really 8ft + the
vertical wall thickness.

One other factor, depending upon how close you place your wall to the end of
the existing wall, either the new wall will snap to the existing wall or visa
versa. That can be annoying.

Thanks for the reply but it is not that. I can make the wall say 6meters and
glue it to another wall then I would expect it to add the thickness of the
wall. What it is actually doing is making the lengths sometimes longer and
sometimes shorter by wierd amounts that do not equal the length plus wall
thickness. They can be 6.77meters for instance. ?This is even with snap
turned off and protection turned on so I presume that it will not snap to
grid or guides etc. Very frustrating and time wasting.

This is unusual behavior for Visio. Have you tried any other type of
drawings? For example, start a new drawing and do some basic things like
drawing lines and circles and squares. Draw them to specific sizes, and then
move them. Do they retain their previous sizes? If not, you might want to
verify your video driver and/or settings, e.g., different screen resolution,
color depth, etc.
