I asked this in another group with no response after 2 days.
I'm thinking about upgrading my current Office XP Developer Package to the
current crop of Office Packages. I will need Access, Excel, Word, Outlook
with the ability to compile an application in Access into a stand alone
application. With Office XP Developer I needed to install Developer and
Office XP Pro to get mdb files and convert them to mde if I did the db in
2002. So which current package will meet these requirements at this time. I
have no need for Networking the application but do find the ability to
create pdf files and combine them a plus. I'm using PDF995 now to do this so
it might not be necessary with the latest versions.
Also is Office XP Developer compatible with Vista OS?

The most current version of Office is 2007. The interface is very different
from previous versions and takes some getting used to.
No version of Access requires developer tools to create an mde file.
No version of Access can be compiled into a stand alone application.
But,this is where the developers tools is required. To deliver an Access
application to a user who does not have Access installed or the version of
Access your application is in, you need to deliver a runtime version of
Access.
Office Professional includes everything you are asking for with the
exeception of the developers tools. If you upgrade to anything prior to
2007, you will have to purchase the developers tools. With 2007, the
developer's tools are a free download.
2007 will produce pdf files, but prior versions will not without a third
party product.

So if I upgrade to Office Professional 2007 I can download the developer's
tools for free then? How about running Access files in 2002 will I be able
to use the pdf printer capabilities with that or is Access 2007 compatible
with 2002 file format. As for creating a stand alone as long as I can
convert from an mdb to an mde that is fine.
The reason I'm asking this is it looks like the current machine I just
purchased from Dell is the last source of Windows XP Pro and only sold with
Vista as a downgrade. I have the Vista Business version and I'm sure before
long I will be forced to upgrade to it. One other question is will Office XP
Pro run under the Vista OS?

I really don't know if XP runs okay under Vista, but I assume it would.
If you keep your 2002 mdb in 2002 format, you will not be able to use 2007
to create an mde. You can only create an mde (accde in 2007) for the current
version which means you first have to convert your mdb to 2007 format accdb.
That most likely means some features in 2007 will not be available in you
are running in 2002 format. That may include the ability to use th pdf
format, but I can't say that for sure. If I had to bet on it, I would bet it
would not work.
And yes, you can download the 2007 developers tools free.

It would not be unreasonable to get a copy of Office 2007 and install it on
one machine and test doing an upgrade of your apps.
I think it is 60 days. but I don't remember for sure. It is fully
functional, just time limited.
