Post subject: Cannot open older version drawings Add to elertz Archived from groups: microsoft>public>visio>troubleshoot (more info?)
I have installed Visio Standard 2007. I have many old Visio drawings created
in previous versions of Visio....from Visio 3 to Visio 2003. There are many
old drawings I cannot open in 2007, but they still open fine in 2003. Visio
will start then crash and send error report to MS. Visio error screen just
states that Visio has encountered an error and needs to close. I have tried
many different solutions to try and open, but nothing has helped. Any new
ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd start by trying to save the 'troubled' documents in v2003 as xml files,
and see if I can open the xml versions in v2007.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried this and received same result. Same
error occurred when I opened file in v2007.

are these 'standard' drawings or are they calling attached add-ins/code?

They look standard to me...just flowcharts with different shapes...nothing
fancy at all. They open fine with Visio 2003 just not with Visio 2007.
There are other documents that look just like them but do not have this
problem so it's throwing me for a loop. For now I am running both 2003 and
2007 to get around this problem for a couple users.

If you are able to send me the file for analysis, we can investigate the
problem. Perhaps we can make sure it doesn't crash in the next version.

Hi, has there been any progress on this issue? I have the same scenario.
The weird thing is that the problems just began recently. Up until last
week, we were able to open any earlier drawings with Visio 2007, now we can
open none.
