Post subject: error "607" again
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>visio>printing (more info?)

I have left a few posts about getting the 607 error when trying to plot to a
large format plotter. Plotting from all other programs works fine including
Office 2003 Pro and printing from Visio to other "normal" printers works
fine. I have tried the Visio.ini and .bin deletion and it made no
difference. All print drivers are the most current and all service packs and
updates are installed. Is there a resolution to this problem or am I (and
others I have seen post this problem with no results) just spinning my
wheels trying to get a plotter to work with Visio? I have tried plotting
from all seven of my systems and nothing works. I am running XP Pro with
Pentium 4 and 512 DDR ram. I have made around 30 drawings and diagrams that
need to be plotted and can't seem to get it to work.

Help!

Dwight--I am not sure about your specific problem, but I can relate a
problem I had that might be similar.

Many years ago I had a problem with a large format HP Inkjet Plotter. I
worked with an HP support person who explained the situation to me and
helped me find a work-around.

He said that my issue was not enough memory in the plotter to complete the
Vector to Raster conversion.

Basically, Visio is a vector graphics program as opposed to a raster
graphics program (like Paint or Photoshop). In order to output to a inkjet
plotter (which is basically just a really big, souped up DeskJet), Visio's
vectors must get converted to bits. That conversion can happen either on
your desktop computer by the printer driver or, in the case of the really
nice HP Plotters, in the plotter hardware itself.

In my case, the vector to raster conversion was taking place on the plotter
and the plotter was running out of memory. The HP support person told me to
change a print driver setting that did the conversion on my computer and the
problem was solved. I was now just sending a stream of bits to the plotter
instead of vectors. It takes longer this way (since there are a lot more
bits to send down the wire than vectors), but I did get my diagram to print.

This was at least 5-6 years ago, so I don't remember the exact plotter
driver setting. I don't even know if this relates to your issue. But you
might poke around in the printer properties to see if there is any setting
that sends bits down to the plotter instead of vectors.
