There is no difference, you are ex-HP and Lori is ex-Visio. She just happens
to work in a totally different part of the company that acquired Visio.
Except for having the same name on her paycheck, it's the same as working
for a different company. She is also not a novice, she was on the original
team that developed Visio 1.0.

Visio 2003 is the second version of Visio that has been developed under the
MS banner so some of the lower level routines have been changed to be more
in line with other MS products.

The insult was in Joe's message, you only mentioned that you agreed with his
comments.

Lori's original message

How can you consider Lori's suggestion comments or irrelevant? She
suggestions a specific action (Contact HP, replace the drivers ). She is not
dumping the problem on HP, just making sure that the most common problem,
outdated drivers, is not an issue.

Did the latest Visio service packs have any impact on this problem? There
were some printing bugs addressed.

OK let's keep positive and stay away from this sterile conversation...

I made some tests at a friends who also runs Office & Visio 2003 and
everything prints OK on his Epson Stylus 870 so I guess it points the
problem to the HP driver.

Does anyone know how to get in touch with HP printers engineering
and/or support to submit problems?

Thxs for help

Well, I don't think I applied the patch on Visio 2002 (Visio XP,
right?) but at least it did work perfectly.

Please read my last message and you'll get the last clarifications:

John,

I contacted HP through the web-based support and got the following
answer (translated from French):
"Thanks for contacting HP support

You encounter problems with Visio 2003

An update for Office 2003 does exist on our site:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?product=303770&os=228&lang=fr&lc=fr&cc=fr&dlc=fr&softwareitem=oj-18684-1" target="_blank">http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?product=30377...s=228&l</a>

We hope the information provided...

Gregory - OfficeJet Team"

I don't own an OfficeJet but rather a PhotoSmart printer...
To avoid you checking HP's site, this is an update for the scanning
functionnality that works perfect for me but nothing about printing.

As you can guess, the answer was useless

Then:
"Thanks...

The update didn't resolve your problem.

This update is supposed to solve problems with Office 2003.

Apparently, Visio 2003 doesn't recognize your PSC2510.

We suggest you get in touch with MS Tech Support at the following address:
<a style='text-decoration: underline;' href="http://www.microsoft.com" target="_blank">http://www.microsoft.com</a>

We hope provided information...

Celine - OfficeJet Team"

I still don't use an OfficeJet...

Do you understand now why I don't want to be redirected to 1st level
tech support departments?

Given that I don't pay for support (although support charges are
included in the product price, as fas as I know), I get what I paid for
(on MS and HP point of view): no support or useless support...

So please, if you hear about a driver update for using Visio 2003 on a
PSC2510, you now know that I'm interested...

end of flame... Wink

Boy...go on vacation for a couple of weeks and come back to a mini-flame
war. :-0

I am sorry that you miss-interpreted my response as flip--it was certainly
not meant that way. I didn't mean to pass the buck, but in the case of
printing problems, 9.5 times out of 10, the problems are found with the
driver and not the application software.

Whenever I hear about a printing problem, I try to duplicate it the best I
can. Since I could connect to about half-dozen different HP Printers I
tried printing to all of them. They all worked great, so my assumption was
that the particular printer driver in question was at fault and not Visio.
Most HP Printers work great with Microsoft products--but we hear of problems
with specific drivers more frequently than we'd like.

I've been on all sides of this issue. I used to work at HP and even wrote a
driver or two in the mid 80's and can tell you that device drivers are
tricky things. They can be complex to write and difficult to test under
"real world" situations. Right now, device drivers (as a category) cause
more OS crashes than any other OS component. My counterpart over in the
Device Driver SDK world works hard to create test apps, test suites, and
driver certification programs to help driver writers write more reliable
drivers. But MSFT can't force anyone to use them (unless they want their
drivers included in the OS as opposed to installed separately). Even with
these test suites, some problems can still slip through the net.
Manufacturers such as HP are usually pretty quick to address these problems.

Realistically, there is no way HP could afford to test every version of
every printer driver with every version of every Microsoft product, any more
than Microsoft can test every version of every product with every version of
every HP Printer. We do our best--but the test matrix is HUGE even if we
just stick to the printers with the largest numbers in use.

If I am reading the thread correctly, it sounds like the problem has been
fixed (or at least a workaround has been found). Sorry for the long winded
response...
