I'm running Visio 2007 Standard and Word 2000 (company setup) and if I have
an embedded Visio object in Word and go to edit it, I have an issue.

In Word, if I do a Right-click -> Visio Object -> Open, No Problem.

However, if I do a Right-click -> Visio Object -> Edit, Visio (or maybe
Word) blows away my custom12.vsu and replaces it with the default file
blowing away my custom toolbars, macros, etc.

Anyone know how to stop this from happening?

Thanks!

Hello Erica,

My guess is that either Visio is started without add-ins or in a different
order which interfere's with the UI. The vsu file gets over written as it
takes a snapshot of the UI prior to the application closing, which if it was
in an unmodified state, then that's what will be recorded.

So I've got two suggestions:

1) Get some insurance - Open Visio normally get your toolbars set up as you
like, close Visio and then create a copy of your vsu file so that you can
replace it if it gets over written in the future (this is probably not a bad
idea in general if you've invested much time in getting the UI the way you
want it).

2) Protect yourself from change - Prior to editing the Visio object in Word,
open a normal instance of Visio, which you can close again after you've
finished editing the Word version. In this way, your personalised Visio app
should be the last version of Visio to be closed and so your custom UI
should be retained in the vsu.

Anyway, not a perfect solution but hopeful will prove useful. Perhaps Mark
and others will have better suggestions.

Best regards

John
