Hi, I am new to MS Publisher, so forgive me if these questions are answered
here already.
I am using Publisher to create a web page for my company to manage and
retrieve documents that we frequently use.
I have created numerous pages with links to external files and external
websites.
I have included HTML code on the pages to allow opening external websites in
a new window (got this on an online publisher forum)
I want to be able to test the links that open the external files (word, ppt,
excel, pdf) but dont seem to be able to do this. I have read that this cannot
be done in Web Page Preview mode.
Can I publish my web pages to a folder on my PC (which includes all files to
link to) and test it from there?
Or, can I burn it to a CD to do the same?
(I cant put it onto the live shared folder until testing is complete)

You are correct
Publish to a folder on your computer that contains all associated files and
folders and test it
Then when you are happy with it post it to the final location

Probably, maybe, but you might also end up writing the relative links so
they work on your computer, but not when published. I would suggest that you
upload your external files to a folder on your host, and write absolute
links to those files, to minimize the chance of error. You can wait to
upload your site files later, but can test the external files via a web page
preview. No one will know those files are even there until you upload your
web files.
Assuming that you create a folder called "downloads" on your host in the
directory at what will be the same level as your web files, and upload your
files to that folder, then your links (not counting the open in a new window
code) will be:
I would suggest that when you name your files, that you avoid using spaces,
and no other special characters other than underscores or dashes. One
problem with underscores is that when the hyperlink underline is present,
you can't tell whether there is a underscore or not, so that can create
errors. It is also best to use all lower case.
