Post subject: Files not opening after Windows Software Service 3.0 installed Archived from groups: microsoft>public>publisher (more info?)
Hello, I'm having problems with some files not opening after a windows
update. These publisher files have content pasted as link from MS Excel
(2007), and these very files fail to open. I have to do a system restore
previous to service 3.0 to be able to recover them. That is a big hassle, and
the file I work with is very important and took a very long time to be put
together.
Do you know of a fix to it? How can I prevent these service pack to be
installed? Actually, I think it's good to have a service pack installed, if
that's an overall improvement in security or bugs. I just wished it didn't
mess up my pub files with linked spreadsheets.
My system:
Windows XP Professional, Office 2007

Are you saying you installed the Office Service Pack? There is a Hotfix that
enables you to open old files.

Well, in my system restore I have to select "Software Distribution Service
3.0". This Distribution Service is an automatic update, I guess.
I also installed the hotfix package described in
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972566/ but the file won't open still.

Anybody else would know how to deal with it?
Thanks,
Eduardo

If it is only Excel linked files, they could be damaged. Have you tried breaking
the link when you do the system restore? Have you thought about uninstalling the
Software Service?

Thanks for your attention so far. I had gotten into the habit of system
restore to get around my problem and didn't pay attention to this post...
Anyway here are more details of my files: My .pub file is a catalogue of
products. The tables with prices are from an xlsx file that I pasted as links
into the publication. There may be more than 110 tables!
I tried using the catalogue merge feature accessing another price database,
but publisher didn't give me much flexibility in having several different
price table layouts from the same source... So I had to use this method.
Now, I take it I have to delete all those linked tables. Start a new
publication. Revert the system restore. And start copying and pasting as link
again... what a pain...
The spreadsheet with the tables is linked to several other price
spreadsheets too. I can open them all in Excel with no problem.

I don't know how to advise you, Eduardo.
When I do catalogue merges I put everything into one folder; all the data bases
and any pictures I use, it seems to work better. I've not worked with multiple
tables. There is help:
