Post subject: DDCONV error in VSS2005 SP1 Add to elertz
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>visual>sourcesafe (more info?)

After installing SP1 for VSS2005, DDCONV is failing while creating a new database on a network share with the following
errors:
=======================================
DDCONV has finished processing
Error were detected during processing
Detail may be found in file ....ddcerr.log

Acknowledging this message I then receive this next message:

Failed to create new data base at
File um.dat may be corrupt. Ask your SourceSafe administrator to run the Analyze utility on the this database
Failed to add the current Windows user as SourceSafe database user.
Database creation failed.

The contents of the ddcerr.log file is
DDCONV initializing
Creating subfolders
Moving files
Invalid handle.
========================================

If I uninstall VSS2005 and reinstall, without SP1, DDCONV works correctly creating a local or network share database.
If I install SP1 again, DDCONV again fail if creating the database on a nework share (but it does work if the database
is on my local drive).

VSS2005 (fails on 8.0.50727.1551 - sp1 from kb973847)
Running on Vista Business SP1 in a windows domain network
Full permissions to share where database is created.

Hello Brad,

First of all, I'm sorry to see our product is frustrating your use
experience. The SP1 symptom indeed looks like an issue of VSS. I will spare
no efforts to help you out. Brad, in order to fix it, I must first
reproduce the issue on my side. Would you please cooperate to provide the
following env. Information to facilitate my reproduction?

1. Because it happens in Vista box, and I did not find relevant issue
reports in Windows 2003/XP boxes, Brad, would you tell me the UAC state of
the system?
2. The sourcesafe database is saved in a network share folder. Would you
please let me know where the share folder is? In the local Vista box? If
not, what's the OS version of the server? If we create the DB in a local
folder, will it throw the same error messages?

Before I get the above information that are necessary for this issue, I'll
discuss with the VSS product team to see whether they have any suggestions.

Regards,

I wouldn't say it is frustrating me, that would be to strong a statement. But yes, I would like resolve if possible.

1. UAC is turned off on Vista.

2. The share folder is on a server in our domain. The server OS is win 2003 R2.
As noted in the original post, creating a db in a local folder works correctly.

Since the original post I have tried this on with a workstation running XP and Vista Ultimate and it works correctly on
both of those with VSS SP1.

Hello Brad,

I have built an environment: Windows Vista 32bit Ent + Windows 2003 32bit
Ent R2, where the Vista box runs with VSS 2005 SP1, and the Win2003 box
exposes a shared folder whose Everyone permission is set to "Full Control".
However, such a test environment runs well on my side. I'm still contacting
the VSS product team for their experience of such a symptom, I will be back
soon.

Hello Brad,

I have discussed the issue with the VSS product team. They told me "Invalid
handle." is often an indication of this fact - the network goes down,
handles to opened files are invalidated, ddconv fails. Because you said, it
fail if creating the database on a network share (but it does work if the
database is on my local drive), Brad, would you check your network, network
cards? If nothing else works, you can create local databases and move them
later to the share of interest (move all the files and folders in the
database), but if it is really a network issue, there will still be the
"invalid handles" errors.

I am absolutely, 100% positive it is not an issue with network connectivity, which also explains why it works fine
without sp1 installed (this includes uninstalling vss and reinstalling without sp1).

Hello Brad,

I'm sorry. I have tested this VSS issue again in my lab, but still could
not reproduce the errors. Brad, would you please let me know whether this
issue is critical to your business? The product team told me that the
workaround is to create the database on the local drive and copy it up to
the network share. Brad, can this workaround work for you? I have also
logged your report in our internal database for future reference. Please DO
let me know anything that I can do for you.

Thanks,
Jialiang Ge (jialge@online.microsoft.com, remove 'online.')
