If i convert a database to 2003 that has been split into a FE and BE do i
have to convert both. And if i do will the converted FE automatically link to
the 2003 BE or will it still link to the older version BE

If you're converting from 2000 (you don't say!!), Access2003 can use
A2000 format databases - in fact it does so by default. I'm pretty
sure you can use an A97 database as a backend without converting.
