Change font throughout a publication

p.s. All you need to do to change a text style is select your text box and click
the style you want. If your text boxes are linked all the text will change.

Please bear with me , Mary!
I went to:
Format
Styles and Formatiing
Create new style

And then in the pop up box I gave the style a name, chose a font, and then
pressed OK.

Its now there as a format to apply.

If I put the cursor in a line of text and then choose the formatting scheme
I want to apply it will change that line of text to the new scheme.

What I am after though, Is to change the font throughout the entire document
(and my text boxes aren't linked as the pages are worksheets for kids) - I
guess like what happens when you choose a font scheme.

Is this possible (fingers crossed!)

You are doing something wrong... I can create a new style and it works for the
entire document. Are you selecting *Normal* and then selecting a font?

I have read the help article, and then I tried seleting normal and then
selecting a font.
Again, it will only change the text in a paragraph that I put the cursor
on/in.
But what happens is it changes the format of everything as well (i.e.
changes bold back to regular, the size etc.)

What I am after is a way of doing exactly what happens when you choose
format
font scheme
apply a font scheme

All I need to be able to do is create a font scheme! Is that possible?

The solution to this problem is the proper use of text styles. You can't
create a font scheme (or at least use it) without using text styles
properly anyway, although a font scheme isn't really what you're looking
for here.

Create a sufficient number of text styles to cover the different
elements of your document. For example, a single text style for
headings, a single text style for sub-headings, a single text style for
body text, etc. This should be done before you create your document, so
that you can apply the formatting consistently as you create it. As you
are discovering, it is frustrating to do this post-facto.

The Normal style should be used for body text - it is the default text
style for a new text box. Modifying the Normal style will modify all
text that has not been manually formatted using the toolbars.

Once you've formatted your document like this, changing the font across
the board is a simple matter of modifying a few styles.

Thanks for your reply (sorry about my delay - no internet access, aaagh!).
Absolutely agree with you re making changes after the fact - very tricky for
a dopey publisher user like me.
I think I have to do it that way though, as I am trying to make six
different versions of the same 150 page document (with no linked text boxes)
in different fonts (in Australia, we have a different font for each state for
kids to learn to write with, and I am trying(!!!) to change the activity book
I have written into each of the different fonts).
So just to clarify, the best way to try and do this would be to go:
Format
Styles and Formatiing
Change the normal style into the first font I want to replace with

and then you have to go and click your cursor in every text box to change to
the new font style.

When I have tried this though, it changes the font size to whatever is set
in the format scheme that you have just set. Whilst I want the document I
have written to be in the same font throughout, it does have many different
font sizes.

But, if you choose font schemes, and select a font scheme to apply, it will
change the font but not the sizes.

Does that mean that I can't create something like the built-in font schemes
(that will change the font throughout a document but not change the sizes
that you have selected), and the only option is to do it the other way (which
results in font size changes).

Does the new version of publisher allow you to "create a font scheme)?
