Grammar question:

"The group go to London..." -or- "The group goes to London..."

Which is correct and, more importantly, what sort of grammar
rules/guides come into play?

Thanks.

Group is a collective noun and is therefore treated as singular. As a
result the correct form of the verb is "goes"

At least that is what I learnt at school about 50 years ago when I believe
there was a lot more emphasis placed on correct usage of the language than
appears to be the case with the current bunch of educators, or some of them
at least.

See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collective_noun (under "Metonymic merging of
grammatical number")

My experience is that it's more common in British than in US English.

I learned that around 50 years ago, but I have heard rumours that it is
gradually changing, and I find myself using the occasional plural verb
with such collective nouns. The other thing that has changed in those
intervening 50 years is my ability to recall examples.
