Post subject: caption number does not pick up the chapter number Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>numbering (more info?)
I am working on a separate document (which is, say, a second chapter of a
large one to be created later) using Word 2003 pro.
My Chapter Title style has the number 2 inserted and all subsequent
sections, equations etc. pick up the chapter number correctly. That is, my
sections are automatically numbered 2.1, 2.2 etc., subsections 2.1.1, 2.1.2
or 2.2.1 and 2.2.1, etc. The same with equations: 2.1, 2.2 etc. So far, so
good. That is what I expected.
However, when I try to add captions to existing tables or insert automatic
table numbering, the captions start with 1.1, then 1.2 and so on. The same
happens with figure captions.
How to force change of the leading 1 to 2 (or any other number)? What
should I do when I need to add section number to the caption? Or, how to
format the caption numbering?

You must use the "Include chapter number" feature in the caption. In order
to be a "chapter number," it must be the paragraph number of a numbered
paragraph in a built-in heading style.

Thank you Suzanne,
Include chapter number was checked. Do you mean that my chapter title style
has to be based on Heading 1? or is there more to it?

Your chapter title style has to *be* Heading 1 (or Heading 2, or 3...). It
cannot just be based on it. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Numbering/ChapterNumber.htm; although this article
is about page numbering, the same principle applies to captions.

Thank you Suzanne, it did the trick. Your help is always very much appreciated.
Amazing why it is so difficult to find that this has to be one of the
supplied headings or why a heading based on the supplied one does not inherit
its properties. Well, the world is full of surprises.

I agree it's subtle, but look at the Help topic "Include chapter numbers in
captions." It begins by saying:
"To include chapter numbers in captions, you must apply a unique heading
style (heading style: Formatting applied to a heading. Microsoft Word has
nine different built-in styles: Heading 1 through Heading 9.) to chapter
headings. For example, if you use the Heading 1 style for chapter headings,
do not use the Heading 1 style for any other text in the document."
Note that it tells you that Word has nine built-in styles, but the
definition of "heading style" is not limited to those styles.
Item 1 below that, however, says, "Apply one of the built-in heading styles
to the chapter headings in your document." It does specify "built-in." And
if you click on "How?" it even details how to do this through the Bullets
and Numbering dialog.
Most of us have gotten used to not using Help but it's often so useless, but
in this instance it actually is helpful.
