During the last day or two, whenever I use one of the toolbar buttons for
bullets or numbering in Word 2003, the program crashes. After file recovery,
sometimes the buttons work but more often than not, they crash the program
yet again. I tried deleting normal.dot so Word would recreate it, but that
didn't seem to help.

If Word crashes each time you use Bullets/Number then you may have a corrupt
key in the Registry. That's where the Bullets/Numbering settings are stored,
not your Normal template.
In this situation you may want to use the Registry/Export Registry file
command and export your selected branch. That way if you find the change
wasn't necessary or incorrect, you can merge the deleted branch back to to
the Registry by double-clicking the resulting file.

That is usually a sign that you have a corrupt or incompatible printer
driver. Check that you have the latest printer driver from the support site
for your printer and then delete and reinstall the printer.

Thanks, Beth! This worked for me, and my bullets and numbers are back in
business.
One thing I should mention is that when was drilling down to find the
registry key you described, I also found a key related to a printer I had
deleted (per Terry's suggestion in this thread). I exported and then deleted
both keys, so I can't say for sure which did the trick, but as I said, I'm
back in business.

Glad to hear the problem is resolved, Betsy. Thanks for the update.
The key for your printer holds information such as the Envelope feed and
options when printing envelopes rather than information about the printer
itself. So if you no longer use that printer then it contained unneeded
information anyway. But if you ever do use the printer you might find you
need to adjust the Envelope options again if you ever previously adjusted
them, which isn't a big deal.

Hi, Beth--
I have the same problem as gingerpeach, but when I look in the List Gallery
Presets folder I don't see anything that looks like Gallery Presets key. All
I see are 8 icons with the following labels:
(default)
Data 1 - Data 6
Picture Bullets
Any suggestions?

It looks like I omitted "List" when referring to the key in my reply. Sorry
about that. Try renaming the List Gallery Presets 'folder', which is
referred to as a 'key' in the Registry.

The same issue happened with me, and the Google search took me to this article.
Beth, your solution helped. I removed the key suggested by you and back in
the bullets and numbering business, which I like so much to organize my docs.
