Post subject: How do I auto generate filename to appear in footer for new docume
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>word>newusers (more info?)

I am using Microsoft 2003. I am not sure how to make the filename auto
generate itself in the footer. For example, When i copy paste the whole
content of my previous document to a new document, is it possible for the
filename to auto generate itself in the footer?
I have read previous posts relating to similar issues which involves macros.
I have tried but yet failed and I am not good at coding either.

Can anybody help me with the auto-updating of filenames in footer please?

You can insert the FILENAME field in the footer. If you save the file under
a different name, you can then switch to Print Preview and back, which will
update the field.

Thank you so much. I have another question. It is also similar to this
subject. But instead of at the footer, is it possible for the filename to
auto generate itself in a paragraph?

Do I follow what I did for the footer?

Yes, the FILENAME field will work anywhere in a document.

I have applied what I did previously but it did not work. The filename did
not update and it still remains the same.Is there any other alternative?

Most fields do not update *automatically*. You would have to force an update
either by using a macro (suitable code at
http://www.gmayor.com/installing_macro.htm ) or switch to print preview and
back having saved the document..

Or select the field and press F9.

But are you inserting the field correctly in braces created using Ctrl+F9?
Are you doing this AFTER saving the document with a new filename? (The
Filename field is not clairvoyant: it cannot update to the new filename
until AFTER you have use SaveAs and assigned a new name.)
