I have a similar reverse problem.

I have the problem of spell check suggesting "i" and "e" in i.e. to be
capitalized. however, if I hit add to dictionary, then if I lowercase it
when it is used as a pronoun, then I have an additional problem.

any suggestions to get it to recognize i.e. as it's intended use?

I use Office 02 SP3 on a Vista Home Basic machine

I don't have a solution, but I do have a suggestion that perhaps someone
will implement some day. I would like to be able to define strings
which I consider to be correctly spelled. In your case the string would
be "i.e." enclosed in word boundaries. Similarly, I could add strings
such as "deja vu" where neither word would be considered correctly
spelled taken in isolation, but as a single string it is correct.

The problem as it stands is that you cannot define "i.e." specifically
as correct.

The Microsoft checker is better than most, though.
