When I select a document to open, it first goes to a blank Word page. I then
have to click on the Windows logo in the top left corner to view a listing of
documents and choose it from there. How do I get the document to open the
first time I click on it instead of going through these extra steps?

Which version of Word and Windows and are they patched up to date? Does this
happen when you use File, Open to open a document or when you double-click a
document in Windows Explorer?
