Word attachments trying to open by using Excel

I receive Word Documents as e-mail attachments in outlook. For the past few
days when I try to open these attachments directly from the e-mail message,
the Word attachment attempts to open in Excel. I then get a variation of the
message "Excel is unalbe to open this file".
If I save the document to my PC and then open it, the file opens properly
using Microsoft Word.
I thought i fixed this on 8/28 by running a detect and repair job through
Microsoft Outlook. After I ran it, the problem appeared to be resolved.
However the problem began again today (8/29).

Office has all updates installed.

If you double click in Windows Explorer on a Word file, does it also try to
open in Excel? If so, you need to change the doc association from Excel to
Word.
