How can I get Word 97 to spellcheck on XP?

Next:  Spelling / Grammar: Proofing tools just isn't there

I have recently had to install Word 97 on a friend's XP Home PC but it will
not spellcheck. The Spelling part of the Spelling & Grammar tab in tools |
options is grayed out. I checked out the solution in q257643 but there is no
Spelling within HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing
Tools\. There are 5 values but no Spelling. Grammar works fine. Any
suggestions please?

It can't hurt to try creating the Spelling key (right-click the Proofing Tools
key, click New > Key, and enter 'Spelling' in the name box) and making sure it
has the permissions mentioned in the KB article.
